Enso, n. circle that is hand-drawn in one or two uninhibited brushstrokes to express a moment when the mind is free to let the body create.

In the exhibition Ensō at Sicky Nar Nar Gallery, Sami Lee Woolhiser presents a site specific and interactive installation. Sami strives to create interactions that contribute to the aesthetic and holistic experience of the world. Imagery reflected in the forms, texture and stains are reminiscent of landscape and the figure. Ensō symbolizes enlightenment, strength, elegance and the void. It is a symbol from Japanese ink painting where one fluid stroke connects with its end. This is the essence she aspires to capture for the audience as they experience this work.

Molten Metal: A profound experience

Can't I just graduate, go make art and backpack across the world already?

I had the most profound experience in Atlanta during our bronze casting. First up, live end. Life literally on the line, no words, pure adrenaline, no thoughts, just actions. Pour, molten metal, orange, glow, stop, step, lift, pour, heat, stop, pour. I hardly have words for it, but I have found something I am passionate about. Sculpture is an amazing thing, I had the opportunity to bond with some amazing people, learn and have an incredible experience.

Here are some people and activities that make me happy...

Ensō: Progress I

Hey all! Here is an update on my upcoming exhibition at Sicky Nar Nar from February 27th - March 5th. It is a site specific and interactive installation.
Boundary Hall (Sculpture building) has allowed me the luxury of space to build the 22x22' frame and Alexander Hall (painting building) has given me the pleasure of having a private space to dye my fabric. I am feeling grateful for the facilities here at SCAD right now!

Iron Casting at the B-Complex

Amazing local artists including Jeffery Loy welcomed us to their studio at the B-Complex in Atlanta, GA! It is an incredible hub for makers, please check out their site! Thank you so much again for the awesome experience.

Also thank you to the SCAD Atlanta Sculpture department, Professor Peterson and his students for leading the pour, you truly made our class and this experience possible!

Here are some images from the B-Complex and our iron pour!

Bronze Casting: SCAD Atlanta Winter 2014

Wow! What an incredible weekend! The wonderful professors and sculpture department in SCAD Atlanta graciously welcomed us to their studio to cast 600 lbs of molten bronze! I'd say we did pretty well. I had the honor of leading off first as the live end to pour. Overall everyone did an amazing job, sculpture really is a team sport (as Professor Peterson would say!).

Slurry!

Now this is how we do it at Boundary Hall! Here the Foundry class, taught by Prof. Matt Toole, we are adding layers of slurry (a silica mix with sand) to their wax sculptures-- soon to be bronze!
