Tactile Sculpture

This is a project I worked on last quarter in my digital sculpture application's class. I designed it in maya by translating a photograph into a 3D model by a process called Heightfield. I then had the model created from a piece of Ren, a very heavy and dense foam, and 3 access milled. This machine basically takes a bunch of drills and carves the piece according to the directions its given by the model.

I took a mold of the ren piece and made several castings in plaster. I dyed and layered the plaster to add and give dimension. But I believe that the most revolutionary thing about this piece is the tactile quality it has. This is my first tactile art piece. There is a movement called "Blind Art" but this demographic is too limited but the idea is brilliant!
We are not limited to the sense of sight, however in the art world we are forced to be limited to it. We have smell and sound and touch. I believe there is a future in the fine art world for these senses.

Believe me, this piece feels beautiful.

Serial Slicing

Hey everyone!

Here is that piece that I posted some progress of earlier. I decided to hang it sideways to make it feel more like a sculpture than an architectural form. This was a fun experiment.

A Moment is Not Just a Moment

I like the idea of spending an hour, a hundred hours with [with, in, or within] a moment. By dedicating that time to a moment beyond its original existence it almost extends its life. It will become a part of you and your memory if you spend enough time with a moment. We are created by a series of moments, a never ending string of moments. We are not only a result of those moments, we are every one of them.
