Fiber Relief in Progress: Laser Cutting

I am working on two fiber relief works, similar to my installation Passage. These are smaller studies made in a similar fashion. However, here I am utilizing 3D modeling technology in Rhino and a Laser cutter.


Here I am simply subtracting objects from the main form with the Boolean2Objects tool. Here I can click through the results and have the pyramid forms removed from the cube.


Below I have used the command "Contour" which allows me to extract serial information from the model which can be read by the laser.



Because the hanging sheets of fabric won't be strong enough to support the undercuts I have hand drawn flaps that will be cut instead of the pentagonal shapes. Here I can sew back these flaps with inserted supports.

4D design: Fog (In Progress)

Hey everyone! 

I've been busy working on my first installation for a class called 4D design, a time based installation class. This is an awesome class to be taking because it is pushing me to work with technologies such as film and projectors, mediums that are not common in my work. 


First I drew the patterns from Paper Models of Polyhedra at “http://www.korthalsaltes.com/index.html” and designed the pieces in Illustrator.  It was crucial to label and layer the parts correctly so that they would transfer into Rhino correctly. In Rhino I had to make sure that each line segment was transferred into curves, delete any duplicates, and make sure that the file is “clean”. These steps require much attention to detail; unfortunately I hit many road bumps during the process of working these files transferring them from pdf to illustrator to dxf to 3dm back into dxf. Thanks to the postponed deadline I was able to accomplish what I originally imagined with the 3D projection surfaces!

Follow the drinking gourd

Last quarter my Sculpture class helped Professor Andrew F. Scott assemble his commission installation piece for the Jepson Center, Telfair Museum, particularly for the Pulse Festival. Which is a festival that focuses on art created with technology. 
He designs his work digitally on a 3D modeling program such as rhino or Maya then uses a laser cutter to cut the pieces out of cardboard, it is just a big puzzle from there. Just a little super glue and man power and bam, there you go. Prof. Scott is awesome. More pics here:

This digitally-produced sculpture makes reference to the American folk song “Follow the Drinkin’ Gourd.” Legend has it the song may have been used by conductors of the Underground Railroad to guide runaway slaves to freedom in the North. Scott’s work is composed of two elements suspended from the ceiling in the Jepson Center atrium. A large gourd form represents Ursula Major, the Big Dipper. The dipper points to the North Star, Polaris, shown as part of a series of globe forms representing the Little Dipper.

This set documents the assembly of the Gourd Sculpture at the Jepson Center on February 20, 2012. The Gourd sculpture was transported to the Jepson Center in five parts. The components were then assembled by students collaborators:
